interviews Apr 08, 2017

1.       Tell us a little bit about your background and what you did for a career before you made the change?

Before I had children I was a local government accountant and had progressed well in my career to Accountancy Manager and had my sights on Head of Finance at some point. Then a lot of changes started to occur within local government and accountancy in general and I started to enjoy the job less. This coincided with me having my two children quite close together. My return to work after by youngest was a disaster. I returned to find my maternity cover was remaining and there effectively was no job for me. I was bored, unchallenged and paying a fortune for childcare while I sat and largely did nothing all day. So I quite.

 2.       What changed within you when you had children?

My priorities definitely changed. Spending time with them and seeing them grow became so much more important than a high flying career. I realised it was now or never for a career change.

 3.       What inspired your business idea?

I have always enjoyed art and creative pursuits, but had fallen into an accountancy career. SO I wanted to explore a career that enabled me to be more creative, but could be fit in around the boys.

 4.       How did you move the business from a dream to reality?

The business has really evolved slowly as my time has expanded and the boys become more independent. I’ve started small with word of mouth and slowly built an online presence and built brand awareness which is now leading to numerous referrals.

 5.       What makes your business different?

My own creative approach to design projects and my commitment to customer service. Despite working around the boys I can be very flexible with my working patterns to fit in with clients.

6.       How do you promote your business and what have you found works the best?

Networking is definitely the most successful for me. I struggle on line and really need to push my website more.

 7.       What was your biggest challenge in this journey?

 Marketing and pricing

 8.     And what has been your proudest moment?

Seeing brands I develop really come alive and help drive other womens business forward to help them bring them dreams true.

 9.   What top tips/advice would you give our Mpower mumpreneurs?

Never give up it’s normally just as I’m at my lowest and about to give in that a break through occurs and a fantastic client appears.

 10.   Finally what’s your #mumsmakeithappen moment? (a moment where you made something happen thanks to connecting, collaborating or getting support from another mum in business)

Meeting Lisa Parkes and through supporting her business winning her as a major reoccurring client. It’s been great seeing her gain real confidence in her brand.
