1.Tell us a little bit about your background and what you did for a career before you made the change?

My background spans 23 years in financial services fulfilling a multitude of roles and excelling within service, sales and business leadership. In both business and sales management roles, I Ied top ranked high performance teams of multi-million pound businesses. Latterly of those years I flourished as an Area Retail Sales and Service Coach, coaching and mentoring up and down the hierarchy nurturing the personal development, promotional successes and top performances of the area team.

Being so career driven and miscarrying my first baby, I had my first child, my daughter in my 30’s, a bit later than most at the time. She was greatly longed for and I was eternally grateful when she arrived in October of 2003. That day I just knew deep within my core my life was to positively change forever with a promise I made to myself there and then in the moment! Having not enjoyed the best of childhoods and missing out on the closeness and nurturing of a mother-daughter relationship myself, as I looked in to my baby girl’s eyes I just knew I was about to experience many happy years of a beautiful and inspirational mother-daughter relationship – just from the opposite side of the coin this time!

 2. What changed within you when you had children?

It was during the next few years I burnt myself out and became seriously ill, I acknowledged I needed a career change as I recognised in order to nurture our mother-daughter relationship to the best of my abilities, the pressure, challenges and inflexibility of working 9-5 (actually it was 8-6, continuing in to my evenings, days off and weekends too!) just didn’t work or support how I’d changed or what I really wanted now! My nurturing coaching passions, inspiring the best performance out of employees and my personal priorities had transitioned – instead I wanted to nurture people on their real life desires to be more confident, to achieve better balance, to feel more fulfilled and happier about themselves, their children and their lives - not the challenges, lack of support, never ending impersonal targets of the corporate world! It suddenly hit my awareness with the utmost of clarity the corporate world had become in congruent with my core values and beliefs, posing huge personal difficulties and unhappiness!

3.What inspired your business idea?

My family and friends fully supported me through this difficult time in which I lost my sense of self, confidence, purpose and direction. But it was during my recovery, I realised there were many other mums suffering stress, guilt, low confidence, anxiety and unhappiness in the same way; trying to balance careers, children, relationships and running a household to become what the 21st century termed a ‘supermum’.

4. How did you move the business from a dream to reality?

I left the corporate world and have never looked back since. I achieved external coaching, advanced confidence coaching and NLP qualifications and accreditations (I was already rigorously accredited, supervised and highly experienced within the corporate world too but held no formal transferrable ‘certificate’) and so Empowering Mums and Empowering Mumpreneurs were born!

5. What makes your business different?

Having my business born out of my positive and negative experiences of my corporate years, from my personal experiences juggling it all with motherhood, combined with all the exceptional skills acquired during my time working in the corporate world, clients are often surprised how I know so much about how they feel and the challenges they face without them saying so! I just know, I use all my knowledge and experiences to understand and empathise with the many challenges posed by motherhood. It’s my purpose and passion to share the solutions I know work so successfully with other fellow mums and I make it an enjoyable experience as well as a transformational journey.

The unique difference is what I do and how I do it! How I enable mums to understand everything they need is already within them, how I build their confidence and self-esteem, how what I enable them to do I ensure they can do for themselves over and over for their whole life no matter life’s curveballs! In other words my focus is empowering them for a life-time not just overcoming a short term challenge! Using my expertise and drawing on personal experience, I work with mums and mums in business in a warm, empathetic and intuitive manner, to empower them to transform themselves personally, positively enhancing their confidence, self-esteem and their children’s, find a happier balance with their family lives through consistent nurturing self-care, along with achieving success in their personal lives and businesses too!

 6. How do you promote your business and what have you found works the best?

My main business promotion is from myself and from client word of mouth – I am passionate about what I do and achieve with mums taking every opportunity to speak openly about it. My happy clients share their experiences and results with family, friends and colleagues, referring interested mums to me in the process. My other main source of business promotion is through social media, be it my own social media, groups I’m a member of or supporting others in online mums groups. I also do joint ventures and guest speaking with mums and mums in business groups too.

 7. What was your biggest challenge in this journey?

My biggest challenge encountered along my journey occurred within the first year of starting my business when my 18 year marriage disintegrated – a heartbreaking time for all three of us but one that significantly intensified the challenges further! Now being a sole parent raising a very young daughter alone, continuing to nurture a secure and loving home environment and our mother-daughter relationship that was so important to us both, whilst juggling the health issues and implications on us both of her dad, schooling and homework, running a household and starting up a new business!

8. And what has been your proudest moment?

My proudest moment (s) are when my daughter wraps her arms around me and tells me how much she loves me as we play the game ‘I love you more…’ back and too resulting in more hugs and giggles of gratitude. Proudest, because when I looked into my baby girls eyes all those years ago I promised her one thing, a nurturing mother-daughter relationship full of love, encouragement and empowerment enabling her to believe in herself and have the confidence to know she can achieve anything she wants – and when we wrap our arms around each other and tell each other how much we love each other, I’m so very proud I am doing a good job of being the mum I wanted to be in fulfilling my promise to her!

9. What top tips/advice would you give our Mpower mumpreneurs?

My one solitary ‘critical best tip’ is this:

“Satisfy your own needs with quality self-care and blossom into a confident, fulfilled, fun-loving, happy mum your children will relish”

Enjoying guilt-free, quality me-time to take care of your own needs will enable you to keep your battery levels topped up, feeling great about yourself and enabling you to believe you can be the best mum you can be, raising confident, secure and happy children and that you have the capabilities within you already to achieve anything you desire to achieve in life – remembering at all times – good is good enough as ‘perfect’ just does not exist!

10.Finally what’s your #mumsmakeithappen moment? (a moment where you made something happen thanks to connecting, collaborating or getting support from another mum in business)

My #mumsmakeithappen moment is unquestionably connecting with Nicola on social media last September – neither of us can recall how it came about we just know it was meant to be. We were both astounded by the synchronicity of our life experiences and of our businesses too – so aligned with extremely similar messages and audiences, even to the point my newsletter is called Empower and Nicola’s business Mpower! I firmly believe we were brought together for a reason, for the greater good of reaching out and supporting and positively impacting a huge community of like-minded mums and mums in business!
