Inspire Sponsor

Meet Fabienne Vailes, our Inspire sponsor and founder of Flourishing Education...

Why did you choose to sponsor the Mpower National Business Awards?

Because I have been working with Nicola for almost 2 years. I took part in the Awards last year and loved it. Now, I would like to be a sponsoring organisation to give other mums in business to have the same experience and fun. I believe strongly in supporting fellow mothers in business.

Why did you choose the Innovation category?

The Inspire category is perfect because I have a BIG vision for Education – I want to change the Face of Education so that students and teachers flourish in their educational settings and one way to do this is to inspire our children to be life-long learners and to inspire them to find their passions.

What do see as being the biggest challenges facing mums in business?

The balance between family and professional life. As a mum of two children aged 11 and 9 with a full-time job and a business, I know all too well how the demands on mothers can be difficult to deal with. I think it is about having a supportive network (like Nicola’s) and great tools to  look after ourselves and most importantly not to forget to put ‘our own oxygen on’ before tending to others, our children, partners, family, friends, business and clients. It is so easy to forget and yet vital if we want to flourish in life.

Tell us a bit about your own business journey?

I ran a business (a Language school for 9 years) prior to going back to full-time work in a HE setting. I set up Flourishing Education when I started researching the supposedly ‘mental health crisis’ in education and when I decided to write a book called The Flourishing Student: Every Tutor’s guide to promoting mental health, wellbeing and resilience in Higher Education.

What is your number one piece of advice to mums in the early stage of business?

If you feel inspired to do something, don’t be afraid to push past the fear and to go for what you are inspired to do.

How does your company help mums in business?

I help mums generally as I provide tips, tools and advice for parents of teenagers as well as young people to help them navigate the challenges of the 21st century, particularly around education and am currently co-writing a book with my colleague Dr Thompson for parents which will be out in October 2019.

What are you most looking forward to at the finals Gala on June 29th?

To celebrate with other mums their successes. To be able to award a lady an award for her vision and for her work. Such a fabulous opportunity to cheer someone on and to be able to congratulate them on their achievements and work so far.
